Motivation is all about energy – an energy that starts from within and is directed towards a particular action. We can feel this energy both physically and emotionally.
Motivation can be triggered by an idea or an event that gets us excited or inspired.
We can take that energy or excitement and start acting on it – or not.
We can act on that energy and keep going with it – or not.
It’s wonderful to feel motivated about something, but it’s more important to act on it – and even more important to consistently act on it.
Unfortunately, for a lot of us it’s not so easy.
Why do some people act on an idea, while others never shift beyond the level of aspiration?
As we come to the end of the year, we start to think about how our lives can be different next year. We set goals, resolutions, plans, etc. and we are fully motivated to complete them – at the beginning of the year.
Then we have a wonderful way of talking ourselves out of them – they’re too big, too hard, too many, too expensive, too time-consuming – you name it – they’re just too much.
So what are some of the things you could do to feel motivated heading into the New Year – super energized to change your life in ways you never imagined?
Here are a few suggestions to get you started:
1. Let go of anyone or anything that holds you back
This might seem a bit harsh, but without a positive and supportive environment any limiting beliefs you may have could be coming from the people you’re spending time with or the places you’re spending time in. This could kill your motivation right out of the gate.
Start hanging out with people who will support you in your new idea, new chapter, new adventure, or new venture – go find them – believe me, they’re out there and just waiting for you to show up.
2. Get clear on what you want and why you want it
This isn’t a goal-setting exercise (we’ll come to that shortly). It’s more about letting go of what you think you ‘should’ want and going after what you truly, madly, deeply want.
If you want to be happier and more fulfilled – what do you need to do to make this happen – no limiting beliefs allowed here – dream big – you’ve earned it!
Why do you want to be happier and more fulfilled? Perhaps because you will become the person you always dreamed of becoming and those around you will benefit from this happier, more fulfilled you.
Try answering the following questions:
- Who will you become by the end of next year?
- How will you feel?
- What will be different about you?
- When you become this person, who else in your life will benefit?
- What do you need to start doing today to become this person?
- What will you do to prevent anyone (or anything) getting in the way of you becoming who you want to be?
You could write down your answers, or even have someone ask you them and capture your answers for you. Whatever works best for you – just have a go.
3. …and ACTION!
We’ve now come to the goal-setting part. You’re all set for creating those goals or action items that will not only motivate you at the start of the year, but will also keep you motivated to persistently act on them throughout the year.
Once you get clear on who you want to be, and how your life will be different because of it, setting goals that inspire you to keep moving in that direction will make it more likely that you will accomplish them.
Get those gorgeous goals down – write them, type them, pin them up, glitter them up – whatever you need to do to keep them ‘in-your-face’ and motivating you to action – all year long – and beyond!
Remember, if you don’t know WHY you’re doing something your motivation will just become inspired inaction – meaning you will delay, procrastinate, or just stop altogether.
I’ll end with the wonderfully-wise words of Dr. Seuss:
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”
